Citation: Riau AK, Liu Y-C, Lwin NC, et al. Comparative study of nJand lJenergy level femtosecond lasers: evaluation of flap adhesion strength, stromal bed quality, and tissue responses. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci. 2014;55:3186–3194. DOI:10.1167/ iovs.14-14434 PURPOSE. To compare flap adhesion strength, stromal bed quality, and tissue responses after flap preparation using nJand lJ-energy level femtosecond lasers. METHODS. All corneal flaps were created by either VisuMax laser (lJ-energy level) or femtoLDV (nJ-energy level). Flap adhesion strength in the rabbits was measured with a tension meter 1 and 2 months postoperatively. To investigate tissue responses to laser delivery, immunofluorescence staining and TUNEL assay were performed 4 and 24 hours postoperatively. To assess flap bed smoothness, human donor corneas were used. Surface irregularities were graded based on scanning electron microscopy results.

Lower Energy to Make a Corneal Flap with a 60 kHz Femtosecond Laser Reduces Flap Inflammation and Corneal Stromal Cell Death But Weakens Flap Adhesion

PURPOSE To compare corneal flaps created in rabbits with a 60 kHz femtosecond (FS) laser using different levels of raster energy and to measure early inflammation, corneal stromal cell death, and late postoperative adhesion strength. METHODS Sixty rabbits were divided into three groups of 20 each. A flap 110 µm thick and 9.0 mm in diameter was made in one eye of each rabbit at raster energies...

Flap thickness in femtosecond laser.

Recently, new femtosecond laser platforms have been developed to perform both corneal LASIK flaps and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery. For this reason, we read with great interest the article by Juhasz et al.,1 which was the first study to evaluate the visual outcomes and flap thickness accuracy of the new LenSx multifunctional femtosecond laser system (Alcon Laboratories, Fort Wort...

Influence of microkeratome parameters on the stromal bed and flap edge quality in laser in situ keratomileusis

PURPOSE Femtosecond lasers have become the standard for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap creation, but advanced mechanical microkeratomes are still an alternative, more cost-effective way to create the flap. The SCHWIND Carriazo-Pendular microkeratome is one of the most commonly used microkeratomes. The influence of different cutting parameters (head-advance speeds, cutting he...

The study of propagation of a femtosecond laser pulse in the breast tissue

In this paper, the evaluation of time profile of a femtosecond pulse laser propagated through biological tissues is studied. The majority of the biological tissues with a high scattering anisotropy must be considered as turbid media, that their optical responses are complicated. To study the propagation of ultra-short pulse in turbid media, the diffuse equation is used. In this study, the analy...
